Enoshima, a small island off the Kanagawa coast, is the place named in this print, and its shrine to the goddess Benzaiten drew pilgrims from Edo for generations. The record dates the subject to 1840 through 1860, a period when townspeople made such trips to the island and nearby shrines. The tall, narrow sheet is a pillar print, or hashira-e, designed to hang upright in a room's alcove. The artist dates in the catalog do not match Hiroshige's known career, so the attribution is worth checking.
