Enoshima, a small island linked to the mainland by a causeway off the coast of Kanagawa Province, is the setting here, and its shrine to Benzaiten, goddess of music, water, and fortune, drew pilgrims from Edo for generations. Prints like this were made for a broad urban audience, and the tall, narrow pillar format was meant to hang on a post or wall. The catalog date of 1750 predates the Utagawa artists named here, so the print most likely belongs to the mid-nineteenth century, when travel and pilgrimage prints were especially popular.
