Enoshima, a small island off the Kanagawa coast, is the place named in this print's record, and pilgrims reached it by crossing a sandy causeway from the mainland. Its shrine honors Benzaiten, the goddess of music, water and good fortune, and drew visitors from Edo and beyond. Hiroshige is the artist credited here, though the record's 1750 date seems too early for a print from his working years, roughly the 1830s through the 1850s. The narrow, upright format, called hashira-e, was designed to hang on a wooden pillar, which is why it reads as a tall, slender sheet.
