Enoshima, a small island off the coast of Kanagawa Province, is the place pictured here, and it drew pilgrims from Edo to its shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of music, water, and good fortune. The tall, narrow pillar format, known as *hashira-e*, was made to hang vertically on the posts of a room, so the composition rises rather than spreads across the sheet. Pilgrims often paired a shrine visit with a walk along the shore and the sand causeway that linked the island to the mainland, and prints like this one carried those journeys to viewers who never made the trip. The record gives a date of 1750, but its subject headings point to 1840 to 1860, which is the more plausible span.
