Enoshima, a small island off the coast of Kanagawa Province, is the place this print depicts, and in the mid-1800s it drew many pilgrims from Edo. Its shrine, dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten, attracted worshippers seeking good fortune, and the trip often mixed prayer with sightseeing along the shore. The tall, narrow pillar format suited the shrine steps and paths the travelers climbed. The record dates the print to 1750, but the listed artists worked in the nineteenth century, so that date is probably a cataloguing error.
