This pillar print shows Enoshima, a small island off the coast of Kanagawa that Edo-period visitors reached by a sandy causeway. Pilgrims went there to worship at a shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of music, water and good fortune. The tall, narrow hashira-e format suits a scene of worshippers climbing toward a sacred place. The record credits Utagawa Hiroshige, but its 1750 date looks wrong, since the subject headings point to 1840 to 1860.
