Few places in Edo-period Japan drew pilgrims like Enoshima, a small island off the coast of Kanagawa, joined to the mainland by a sandbar and crowned with a shrine to Benzaiten, the goddess of water, music, and good fortune. This tall, narrow pillar print, a format meant to hang vertically, shows worshippers heading toward those shrines in the mid-nineteenth century. The catalog date of 1750 does not match the artist's lifetime, so the 1840 to 1860 range in the subject headings is the more reliable guide. Hiroshige, a leading landscape printmaker of the period, made many scenes of travel and sacred sites for a growing urban audience.
