Enoshima, the small island off the coast of Kanagawa, is the setting here, and it was a favorite destination for pilgrims from Edo, now Tokyo. Its shrine honors Benten, the goddess associated with water, music, and good fortune, and visitors crossed a causeway to reach it. The record lists the creator as Utagawa Hiroshige, but its 1750 date does not fit his lifetime. The subject headings point instead to the 1840s through 1850s, when Edo's pilgrimage culture was thriving. The tall, narrow pillar format, called hashira-e, was used for prints meant to be hung in pairs or displayed upright.
