This vertical pillar print depicts Enoshima, a small island off the Kanagawa coast joined to the mainland by a sandy causeway, where pilgrims came to worship at a shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, the deity of music, water, and good fortune. Woodblock views like this were sold to ordinary buyers in Edo, and the narrow upright format was meant to hang on a pillar or post in a home. The 1750 date in the record does not fit the 1840 to 1860 period named in its subject headings, so the mid-nineteenth century is the more likely setting.
