Enoshima, the small island off the Sagami coast that is joined to the mainland by a sandbar, was a major pilgrimage destination in the Edo period, drawing visitors to its shrines dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of water, music, and good fortune. This tall, narrow pillar print, a format built for hanging in a room, captures that devotional traffic. The record credits Utagawa Hiroshige, who lived from 1797 to 1858 and was known for landscape scenes of famous places. The catalog date of 1750 predates the artist, so the subject and the 1840 to 1860 range in the record are a better guide to when the print was made.
