Set out as a four-sheet polyptych, with each panel matted separately, this woodcut shows polo, a sport that foreign residents brought to Japan's treaty ports during the Meiji era, when printmakers increasingly recorded new Western pastimes. The record gives a date of 1750, which predates both artists named, so the 1870s date attached to the subject is the more likely period. The names Utagawa Hiroshige and a later artist of the same name point to the Utagawa workshop lineage that carried the style deep into the nineteenth century.
