Spread across six joined sheets, this color woodcut is a panoramic polyptych, and its subject is polo, a Western sport that reached Japan's treaty ports as foreign residents brought it in during the Meiji era. The catalog gives a date of 1750, but that predates both the subject and the artist's working life. The subject dates of 1870 to 1880 are a better guide to when the scene was made. The record credits Utagawa Hiroshige, though it lists two artists with overlapping names, so the attribution is worth checking. The wide format lets the galloping riders and crowded field spread across the full width.
