Enoshima, a small island off the Kanagawa coast linked to the mainland by a sandy causeway, is the place this print depicts, and its pilgrims and shrines set it apart from many views of Edo-period travel. The narrow vertical format, known as a pillar print, was meant to hang on a wooden post. Enoshima's shrines were dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of music, water, and good fortune, and townspeople from Edo made the trip as both devotion and outing. The print is credited to the Utagawa Hiroshige workshop, whose artists produced many scenes of sacred sites and travel in this period.
