Enoshima, a small island linked to the Kanagawa coast by a sandbar, is the place named in this print's subject tags, and it drew pilgrims to its shrine to Benzaiten, the goddess of music, water, and fortune. The record places the scene in the Edo period, roughly 1840 to 1860, when travelers from the capital made the trip to worship and sightsee. The vertical pillar format, called hashira-e, was meant to be hung on a wooden post, which explains the tall, narrow composition. The catalog date of 1750 does not match the subject dates or the artist's working years, so treat that date with caution.
