Enoshima, a small island joined to the Kanagawa coast by a sandy spit on Sagami Bay, is the place this print names, and its subject headings point to pilgrims visiting the shrines there. The island's main shrine honored Benzaiten, a goddess associated with music, water and good fortune. Pilgrimage was a common part of Edo-period life, and ukiyo-e artists like Hiroshige sold scenes of such journeys to city buyers. The narrow, upright pillar format was meant to hang on a wall, which made scenes of devotion feel like a view into a busy sacred place.
