Few pilgrimage sites in Edo-period Japan drew crowds like Enoshima, a small island off the Sagami Bay coast, joined to the mainland by a sandy causeway and sacred to Benten, the goddess of music, water, and good fortune. This pillar print, a tall, narrow format called *hashira-e*, shows pilgrims and shrines, a subject that recurs throughout the period's travel imagery. The record credits the design to Utagawa Hiroshige, whose landscape prints helped make famous places familiar to city dwellers in Edo. Note how the tall sheet squeezes sea, path, and worshippers into a sliver of paper.
