Few places drew more pilgrims in Edo-period Japan than Enoshima, a small island off the Kanagawa coast linked to the mainland by a sandbar and dedicated to Benzaiten, the goddess of music, water and fortune. This tall, narrow pillar print shows the devotional traffic that made the island famous, reflecting a wider boom in religious travel among townspeople of Edo around the mid-nineteenth century. Such journeys were often undertaken as group pilgrimages that mixed devotion with sightseeing and a break from city routines. The print is attributed to Utagawa Hiroshige, whose landscape and travel prints made distant shrines familiar to viewers who would never make the trip themselves.
