Enoshima, a small island off the coast of Kanagawa, is the place this print singles out, and its shrine to the goddess Benzaiten drew pilgrims throughout the Edo period. The subject headings point to pilgrims and shrines in Edo-era Japan between 1840 and 1860, and the attributed Utagawa-school artists worked around that time. The tall, narrow pillar format, called *hashira-e*, suited vertical scenes like this one, where figures and the island's steep approaches can be framed in a single column. The record's date of 1750 predates the artists' careers, so the mid-nineteenth century is the more likely period of printing.
