Enoshima, a small island off the coast south of Edo, is the subject that sets this tall, narrow pillar print apart. Its shrine to Benzaiten, the goddess of water and good fortune, drew pilgrims from the city for generations. Hashira-e were designed to be hung as vertical strips, and this one pairs the island's shrine with the pilgrims who came to visit it. The 1750 date in the record does not fit the artists, who worked in the 1840s through the 1860s, so the print is best read as a mid-nineteenth-century work.
