Few places in Edo-period Japan drew pilgrims like Enoshima, a small island off the Kanagawa coast that is joined to the mainland by a sandbar and holds a shrine to Benzaiten, the goddess of music, water, and good fortune. This pillar print, a tall, narrow vertical format meant to be hung on a wooden pillar, shows pilgrims making their way to the sacred site. The catalog date of 1750 does not fit the artist's working life, so the sheet more likely dates from the mid-nineteenth century, when pilgrimage and shrine scenes were a popular subject in woodblock prints.
