Few views in this collection are as specific as Eno Island, the small islet off the Kanagawa coast that held a shrine to Benzaiten, the goddess of music, water and good fortune. The subjects here are pilgrims and shrine life in Edo-period Japan, a theme that drew many visitors from the city. The record gives the date as 1750, but the subject tags and the artists' lifespans point to the 1840s through the 1860s, when Utagawa Hiroshige was active. The tall, narrow pillar format was built for vertical display, which suited the shrine gates and sloping paths these prints often show.
