This drawing is set apart from most Japanese prints by its subject: a drawbridge in Tokyo and foreign visitors to the city, rather than the actors and courtesans that fill much of the genre. The catalog dates it to 1750, but the artist, Isoda Koryūsai, worked roughly between 1764 and 1788, and the subject headings point to the later nineteenth century, when Edo had become Tokyo and Western travelers were arriving in greater numbers. Cataloging conflicts like this are not unusual for older Japanese works, so the date deserves caution. Drawbridges over the moats around the former castle grounds were prominent landmarks, and their appearance here offers a glimpse of the city as it opened to outsiders.
