The catalog records a drawbridge in Tokyo and foreign visitors as this drawing's subjects, which sets it apart from the many Japanese views on the board. The record is inconsistent about its date: it gives 1750, yet the artist, Isoda Koryūsai, is listed as active from 1764 to 1788, and the subject tags point to 1850 to 1900, a period of growing contact with foreigners after Japan's ports reopened in the 1850s. Koryūsai was an Edo-based painter and printmaker known for elegant images of women and everyday life, so the drawing is worth comparing with his better-known work. Treat the dating as provisional until the cataloging is checked.
