The record places this drawing at a drawbridge in Tokyo with foreign visitors, a pairing that points to the decades after Japan opened its ports in the 1850s. The city was called Edo until 1868, when it took the name Tokyo. The drawing is credited to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist whose recorded working years, roughly 1764 to 1788, do not match the 1750 date in the catalog, so that date should be read as uncertain. Bridges were busy crossing points in both Edo and Tokyo, which makes a scene like this a useful glimpse of daily city life.
