The record ties this drawing to a drawbridge in Tokyo and to foreign visitors to the city, a combination that sets it apart from the many Japanese prints on this board. The subject dates to roughly 1850 to 1900, when Japan's ports had reopened to Western traders and diplomats and Edo had been renamed Tokyo. The credited artist, Isoda Koryūsai, worked in the later eighteenth century and is best known for elegant pictures of women and everyday life. The stated date of 1750 does not match his active years, so the attribution and dating should be checked before the work is cited.
