This drawing is catalogued under the artist Isoda Koryūsai, a woodblock print designer who worked in Edo, the city now called Tokyo, in the late eighteenth century. Its subject headings point to a drawbridge in Tokyo and to foreign visitors, which places the scene in the later 1800s, after the country opened to outside contact. The record gives 1750 as the date, but that predates the artist's documented working years (1764 to 1788), so the date should be read with caution. The drawing belongs to the David Murray Collection at the Library of Congress, and it is worth comparing with the period's woodblock prints to see how artists handled urban views and foreign figures.
