This drawing is catalogued as a view of a drawbridge in Tokyo, a subject that the record pairs with foreign visitors to the city. The catalog date of 1750 does not match the working period given for the artist, Isoda Koryūsai, who was active roughly from 1764 to 1788, so the date is best read as approximate. Koryūsai was an Edo-based master of ukiyo-e, the woodblock and painting tradition of urban scenes and everyday life. Drawbridges over the moats and canals of Edo were a familiar sight in his era. The later subject headings point to the decades after Japan opened its ports in the 1850s, when Western travelers began to visit and record the capital.
