A drawbridge in Tokyo and a group of foreign visitors are the two subjects this drawing is catalogued under, which points to the decades after Japan opened its ports to Western travelers in the 1850s. The record credits the artist Isoda Koryūsai, whose active years (1764 to 1788) fall in the earlier Edo period, yet it dates the sheet to 1750, so the catalog's dates conflict and the drawing's true date is uncertain. Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868, and its bridges and waterways drew steady interest from visitors who recorded them in sketches and prints. The sheet is best read as a view of a city landmark at a time when its streets were becoming familiar to outsiders.
