Drawbridges in Tokyo and the foreign visitors who came to see them are the subjects this drawing is catalogued under, for the years 1850 to 1900. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist active from about 1764 to 1788, which sits awkwardly beside the stated date of 1750, so that date deserves some caution. Japan opened its ports and capital to foreign diplomats and travelers in the later nineteenth century, and views like this often recorded that meeting of cultures for audiences abroad.
