Watermelons and Black children are the whole subject of this color lithograph, which was issued as a collecting card sometime between 1850 and 1900, though the record does not give an exact year. Cards like this were often inserted into packages of tobacco, soap, and food goods, and manufacturers used bright chromolithography to catch buyers' attention. The watermelon-and-child pairing was a stock caricature in American commercial art of the period, drawing on racist stereotypes that portrayed Black Americans as idle or childlike. Today, the card is most useful as evidence of how advertising shaped racial attitudes, not as a neutral scene of rural life.
