Drawbridges and the foreign visitors who came to see them are what set this sheet apart, and its catalog places both in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, the years when the Edo period ended and the Meiji era began. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an ukiyo-e artist active from about 1764 to 1788, but it also gives a date of 1750, which comes before that working period, so the attribution and date are worth treating with some caution. Bridges crossing the city's moats and canals were everyday features of Edo, and the opening of Japan to foreigners in the 1850s changed who crossed them and how they were regarded. The subject pairing of a local landmark with outsiders is the detail most worth noticing here.
