A drawbridge in Tokyo, and the foreign visitors who came to see it, set this drawing apart from other pictures of the city. The catalog credits it to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist active from the 1760s to the 1780s, but also gives a date of 1750 and places its subjects between 1850 and 1900, so the timing is unsettled. The later span covers the opening of Japan to foreign trade in the 1850s and the rapid change that followed, when Western travelers became a more common sight in the capital.
