A drawbridge and a group of foreign visitors set this drawing apart. The catalog places the scene in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, a period when Japan was opening its ports and Western travelers began arriving in the capital in growing numbers. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist active from the 1760s to the 1780s, but its 1750 date falls before those years, so it should be read with caution. The drawing's place in the David Murray Collection at the Library of Congress makes it a useful record of how outsiders were pictured in Japanese art.
