A drawbridge in Tokyo, with foreign visitors shown in its scene, sets this drawing apart from the many Edo-period views on the wall. The record credits it to Isoda Koryūsai, an ukiyo-e artist active from about 1764 to 1788, but the 1750 date and the 1850 to 1900 subject range do not match his career, so both the attribution and the dating remain uncertain. The city was called Edo until 1868, when it was renamed Tokyo, and after Japan opened its ports to Western trade in the 1850s, foreigners became a more common sight on its streets and bridges. Viewers should read the drawing's date and subject together, since they point to different decades.
