A drawbridge in Tokyo, with foreign visitors among its subjects, sets this sheet apart from the many Japanese views of bridges on the same board. The catalog date of 1750 does not fit the artist, Isoda Koryūsai, who is recorded as working between 1764 and 1788, and the subject headings place the scene between 1850 and 1900, when Western travelers and residents were a growing presence in Tokyo. The sheet belongs to the David Murray Collection of Japanese drawings, assembled by an American who worked in Japan in the 1870s, and the notes indicate that some items in the group are dated 1878.
