A drawbridge over a Tokyo waterway and the foreign visitors crossing it set this drawing apart from the many Japanese prints of city life. The catalog dates it to 1750, yet the artist Isoda Koryūsai is recorded as active from 1764 to 1788, and the subject headings point to Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, so the exact date deserves caution. That later window covers the years after Japan opened its ports to foreign trade in the 1850s and the Meiji era that followed, when Edo became Tokyo in 1868 and Western visitors grew more common in the city. It is worth noticing how the artist rendered these newcomers within a familiar Japanese pictorial style.
