Two dark purple eggplants sit beside a sprig of flowering branch, painted in loose watercolour washes that let the white paper show through in the highlights. Works like this were often made as botanical or still-life studies, valued for recording the shape, color and surface of a plant as accurately as possible. Pictures of produce were also common on crate labels and seed catalogues, where a bold, simple image helped a buyer recognise a product at a glance. Look closely at the soft edges of the leaves and the way the stems are only lightly outlined, which shows how the painter worked quickly and trusted the paper to do part of the job.
