A white radish, shown with a flowering stem, is painted directly on paper, which sets it apart from the printed crate labels around it on this board. Most vegetable and fruit labels of the late 1800s and early 1900s were color lithographs produced in quantity for packers and shippers, so a hand-painted version suggests a design study, a sample, or a one-off artwork made before or instead of printing. Such images were meant to catch a buyer's eye, and the flowering plant adds a decorative touch that the root vegetable alone would lack. Looking closely at the brushwork and color can show how an artist shaped a humble crop into something meant to be admired.
