Drawbridges and foreign visitors set this drawing apart from the many Edo-period scenes in the Library of Congress holdings. The catalog places it in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, a time when Japan was opening its ports to Western trade and Edo, renamed Tokyo in 1868, saw growing numbers of foreign residents and travelers. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-based artist active from the 1760s to the 1780s, so the 1750 date seems to be an approximation that predates his known career. The drawing came to the Library as part of the David Murray Collection.
