Fort Hamilton, on the Brooklyn shore, looks out across the Narrows toward Staten Island in this hand-colored Currier & Ives lithograph, published around 1861. The print was drawn by Frances F. Palmer, the firm's most prolific landscape artist, who turned out views of New York harbor and its surroundings for a middle-class market eager for scenes of the region. Its vantage point places the viewer at the fort's guns, where the strait that connects New York Bay to the Atlantic is the commanding feature. The Narrows was a strategic approach to the city, and the fort guarding it dates to the early republic, which gives the view a quiet military undertone beneath its pastoral surface.
