The Narrows, the strait where Upper New York Bay opens toward the Atlantic between Staten Island and Brooklyn, is the focus of this wide harbor view. Panoramas like this were a popular way for nineteenth-century audiences to take in the scale of New York's port, with its ships and shoreline spread across a single sweeping scene. Staten Island's heights were fortified to guard this passage, and the land shown is now part of Gateway National Recreation Area, where old forts stand beside open parkland.
