The Marine Hospital and Quarantine Grounds on the western shore of Staten Island were the front line of New York Harbor's health defenses for much of the 19th century. Ships arriving from overseas were held offshore and inspected here, and sick passengers and crew were treated in the hospital wards before the port would admit them. The complex grew out of colonial-era quarantine practice and was shaped by repeated epidemics, including yellow fever and cholera, that reached the city by sea. Its isolated waterfront setting, with the harbor in view, explains why the buildings were placed where they were.
