This color view is set near Fort Richmond on the northwestern shore of Staten Island, where earlier fortifications overlooked the entrance to New York Harbor. The image is a chromolithograph, a print made by layering color from several lithographic stones, a process that was popular for scenic views in the 1870s and 1880s. Its date is recorded only as approximately 1880, so it likely reflects how the island's harbor-side landscape was pictured in that period, when coastal defenses and growing residential communities were reshaping the shoreline.
