Fort Richmond sat on the Staten Island shore of the Narrows, the strait that gives the main entrance to New York Harbor, and the print shows the kind of coastal defense work that guarded that approach in the decades after the Civil War. The date in the record is given in brackets, so it is an estimate of about 1880. Chromolithographs like this one used multiple stone printing stones to build up color, and they were widely sold as views of notable places. Its color and careful detail make it useful for seeing how the harbor fortifications were presented to the public in that period.
