From a high vantage point, this c1905 view shows the streets of New Brighton on the north shore of Staten Island, with Central Avenue and the rise of Fort Hill. In the decades around 1900, New Brighton was a fashionable seaside community, with large hotels, summer cottages, and a ferry link to Manhattan that drew visitors and commuters across New York Harbor. Aerial-style views like this one, taken from an elevated point, were popular for documenting neighborhoods and their layout. The photographer, A. Loeffler, is credited on the record, though the catalog notes that the details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
