This chromolithograph shows a view near Fort Richmond, a coastal defense on the western shore of Staten Island that guarded the Narrows, the strait leading into New York Harbor. The fort's position made it one of several military works on the island meant to protect the approach to the city. The color printing was a popular technique in the 1870s and 1880s, when publishers used multiple stones to produce vivid scenic views for sale to a middle-class public. The record dates the print to around 1880, though the exact date is uncertain, so the scene likely reflects the island's landscape in that decade.
