This chromolithograph shows Fort Richmond on Staten Island, one of the coastal defenses that guarded the Narrows, the strait leading into New York Harbor. The record dates it to about 1880, a period when the harbor's shore batteries were a point of national pride and sat at the center of debates over coastal defense. Chromolithographs like this one used a separate stone for each color, so the print can show the greens of the grounds and the tones of masonry and sky in a way plain black-and-white views could not. The image is worth a close look for how it presents a military site as a scenic subject.
