Taken from an elevated position above St. George, this view looks west over New Brighton on Staten Island's North Shore, laying out the neighborhood's streets and rooftops in a single sweep. In the late 1800s New Brighton developed into a place of hotels, summer homes and churches, drawing New Yorkers who crossed the harbor by ferry from Manhattan. The print is credited to A. Loeffler and dated to about 1905, though the record notes that these details come from an unverified caption card. Bird's-eye views like this were popular at the time and preserve a picture of the built landscape before later development reshaped it.
