The title makes the pitch plainly: St. George, on Staten Island's north shore, was about twenty minutes by ferry from the Battery at the tip of Manhattan, and this 1886 chromolithograph was built to sell that trip. It was printed by the Hatch Litho. Co. of New York and copyrighted that year by the Staten Island Amusement Company, and its subjects are baseball and the sporting grounds at St. George. In the 1880s, when baseball was drawing large crowds across the city, ferry-served parks like this one invited Manhattan families across the harbor for a summer afternoon away from the city.
