Only about four centimeters high, this drypoint fits the whole approach to Manhattan into a narrow band of paper. It is the first plate in a small series titled *His Miniatures*, made in 1917, and it shows the view from the Staten Island Ferry as it crossed the harbor toward the towers of lower Manhattan. Drypoint is made by scratching lines straight into a copper plate with a needle, and the raised metal burr that results gives the lines a soft, velvety darkness. The print is signed in pencil and was given to the Library of Congress.
